How to Add a Streaming App and Sign In Safely

Install from the device’s own store and type the stated address yourself — the two habits that keep sign-in safe.

Difficulty: Easy Time: About 5 minutes per app Last reviewed

Adding an app is identical in spirit on every platform: find it in the device’s own store, install, open, sign in. The stage worth slowing down for is sign-in, because it is the moment account thieves imitate. This guide keeps the mechanics short and the safety habit exact.

The sign-in codes explainer and the scams explainer go deeper; this page deliberately does not repeat them. Compiled from the platforms’ setup documentation.

What you'll need

  • The device already set up and online
  • The email and password for the service you are adding
  • A phone or computer if the app offers a code

Step by step

  1. 01Find the app in the device’s own store

Every platform has one: Roku’s channel store on the home screen, Fire TV’s find magnifier, the App Store on Apple TV, the Apps tab on Google TV. Search the service’s name there — inside the store, not in a web browser.

Check the publisher name on the app’s page. Real apps come from the service itself or a known platform partner; a one-word name with an unfamiliar publisher deserves a second look.

If this stage fails: If the app is missing from the store, the service may not support that device or model year — the service’s own help pages keep the list.

  2. 02Install, open, choose sign in

Install is one button. Open the app and choose the sign-in option (worded Sign in, Log in, or Already have an account). The app then offers one of two paths: type the email and password with the remote, or use a short code.

  3. 03The code path, done right

The TV shows a short code and the service states an address — each service names its own (for example, Roku linking uses roku.com/link, Amazon uses amazon.com/code, Xfinity uses xfinity.com/authorize). Whatever the screen states: type that address yourself into your phone or computer’s browser, exactly as written. Never reach it from a search ad, a texted link, or a page someone on the phone reads to you — and never read the code aloud to anyone.

Signed in, the TV completes on its own within seconds. The code is single-use and expires in minutes, which is what makes the system safe.

If this stage fails: A rejected code has usually just expired — back out on the TV for a fresh one and retype the address carefully.

Good to know

  • Most services let several TVs share one account; each TV signs in with its own code.
  • Signed-in devices can be reviewed and removed from your account page on each service — useful when a device is sold.
  • If a service ever seems to demand payment to “unlock” your own TV, stop: that is the scam pattern, and the scams explainer names it.
